Challenge

Walking the Steps Forward

The NWTRPA has completed a full review of its annual winter walking challenge, aligning it with the organization’s goals of decolonization and reconciliation. The program now returns to its original name, “Walk to Tuk,” while reflecting the cultural significance of walking in the footsteps of Indigenous ancestors. This decision follows input from stakeholders, Indigenous groups, and residents of the Northwest Territories, ensuring that the challenge honors both tradition and community.

Review

Honoring Indigenous Voices

In 2022 and 2023, the NWTRPA held meetings and public sessions to review the program with guidance from Indigenous leaders and community members. This included a virtual consultation and an in-person event in Tuktoyaktuk. The review referenced key Indigenous rights documents, such as the UN Declaration and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. This process was a step toward honoring the voices of Indigenous communities, with the final report leading to important updates in the walking challenge.

NWT/NU Lotteries Team Captain Prizes

Team captains are essential to Walk to Tuk for many reasons, not the least of which is the role they play in helping to motivate their team and logging the teams’ mileage. All NWT team captains who have submitted their team’s walking time/distance have been entered into a draw to win one of two indigenous carvings. Captain Prizes would be impossible without one of our major funders, NWT/NU Lotteries.
