Stantec employees in Winnipeg, Regina, Thunder Bay, Whitehorse, Yellowknife, and Saskatoon are racking up active minutes during the annual NWTRPA Walking Challenge, taking a decisive step towards mental and physical wellbeing. Armed with toques, cross-country skis, and hiking boots, and boasting a soul-warming sense of teamwork, the groups are getting outdoors to beat the winter blues while competing for prizes and supporting a community cause.

“The Walking Challenge is a great team-building activity that engages employees of all ages and fitness levels,” says Madison Rizzuto, Marketing Manager, an avid year-round runner, and the Stantec Thunder Bay Steppers team captain.  She adds that walking along other teams in the North and the Prairies gives her a deep sense of connection—to her coworkers and community alike. Not only the Challenge is a great opportunity for teams to get active in fresh air during the coldest and darkest months of the year, but also a way to spark friendly competition. “We have a very competitive office,” says Madison, “so we look forward to any opportunity to work together and try to win!”

Stantec’s office in Whitehorse assembled a team of 19 participants. “We go for a group walk at lunch every Wednesday,” says Lee Fleming, Operations Leader. This is the third time his office has participated in the Challenge as a way to boost morale, enhance collaboration, and pave the way to a happier life through exercise. “It will also help get ready for the spring and summer outdoor activities,” adds Lee.

In Yellowknife, Wendy Eggenberger, Senior Administrative Assistant and StanTrekkers team captain, is excited to rally her team of 14 together to up their fitness and support their mental health. For Carmen Bos, Civil Engineer in Training in Saskatoon, leading a team was a no-brainer as she likes promoting a healthy lifestyle and takes part in office events. Joined by 11 Saskatoon Walkers, she’s excited to take a break from sitting behind a computer in a good company. “Our Office Lead is always positively motivating our Saskatoon office to participate in these awesome opportunities. This ensures we always have a positive morale,” says Carmen. “We are also a little competitive in the Prairies,” she adds.

Since January 2, Madison, Lee, Carmen, and Wendy—joined by Stantec’s Winnipeg’s Frostbite Warriors—have been logging in winter activities and making their way to Tuktuuyaqtuuq, the teams’ final destination.

This year, Stantec teams from the Canadian Prairie offices have signed up for the Challenge, stepping up the competition and keeping the long-time participants from the North on their toes.

Stantec is a gold sponsor of the event. By supporting events like the NWTRPA Walking Challenge, the Company invests in the wellbeing and health of its employees and local communities.
