Pedestrianism, or Competitive Walking

As you likely know, the NWTRPA Walking Challenge is a recreational activity that encourages NWT residents to stay active through the winter months, but in other times and places, people have walked for sport. You may be surprised to learn that one of the most popular spectator sports in the late nineteenth century was pedestrianism, or competitive walking.

Enthusiasts filled stadiums to watch competitors walk around a track, in some cases, for days at a time.
